Our Story

Our training organization began as a simple side hustle by a mother looking to earn a little extra money to take her family on vacation. In 1992, Jane Watson began teaching Business Writing at Sheridan College’s night school. With a background in communications for the provincial government, Jane quickly discovered a passion—and talent—for adult education. She began developing her own workshops and delivering them to companies and municipal governments. Over time, she became a recognized expert in her field and authored two widely used books: The Minute Takers Handbook and Write On!

Jane Watson in the early days of the company.

In the early 2000s, after many years in high-tech sales and marketing, Jane’s husband, Colin, joined her in the business. He took on the day-to-day operations and drove sales, allowing Jane to focus entirely on delivering training. As Colin built relationships with other independent trainers specializing in areas such as leadership, customer service, time management, communication skills, and project management, he began actively marketing their courses as well. This expansion of services and client base lead to the creation of J Watson & Associates.

By 2011, Colin recognized the company needed to modernize its marketing approach. Search engines were changing how clients discovered training providers, so he hired a digital marketing consultant to help build a new website. He invited their middle child, Tim, to the meeting. Tim had a marketing degree with a minor in eBusiness, but after working in banking and mortgages, he wasn’t finding fulfillment—or opportunities in his field of study, especially after the dot-com bubble burst.

Tim had always said he never wanted to join the family business. Being introverted, he wasn’t drawn to training or sales. But after connecting with the digital marketing consultant, he joined the consultant’s company and spent the next five years learning digital marketing and entrepreneurship.

During that time, Tim began helping out more with the family business, which had rebranded as J Watson Training. Colin encouraged Tim to experiment with new marketing strategies, so he created an alternative brand and website—Ontario Training Network—offering the same courses and workshops. Over time, Ontario Training Network gained more traction, eventually becoming the dominant brand. In 2016, Tim joined the company full-time, and J Watson Training was fully transitioned into Ontario Training Network.

As Jane and Colin began stepping back from the business to travel the world, Colin officially retired in 2018. Tim needed help with daily operations, so he posted in a local Facebook community group looking for part-time support. That’s when he connected with Deep Mehta—a former sales professional turned entrepreneur, who was operating a Virtual Reality arcade at the time. Deep started working with Ontario Training Network during the day while pursuing his VR venture on evenings and weekends.

Jane soon noticed that Deep had a natural talent for writing and training, and she began mentoring him in business writing instruction.

Then COVID-19 hit.

The pandemic brought an abrupt end to Deep’s arcade, but by then, he and Tim had become close friends—and soon after, business partners. Both tech enthusiasts, they quickly adapted, pivoting the company to deliver training virtually. Together, they helped their network of trainers make the shift online. To support this transformation, they launched a new brand: Virtual Training Network, enabling the organization to expand its reach far beyond Ontario.

Now with people back in offices—at least a few days a week—we’ve evolved once again. Introducing My Training Network, a modern training organization offering flexible delivery: on-site, virtual, and hybrid learning experiences tailored to today’s workplace.
